High-dose vitamin D supplementation (4000iu/ 100ug) during pregnancy is safe and effective

28 Apr 2025

This randomized controlled trial evaluated the safety and efficacy of different dosages of vitamin D₃ supplementation during pregnancy.

Pregnant women were assigned to receive daily doses of 400 IU, 2000 IU, or 4000 IU of vitamin D₃ from 12–16 weeks of gestation until delivery. The study found that the 4000 IU/day dosage was most effective in achieving sufficient maternal and neonatal 25(OH)D levels without any adverse effects.

These findings suggest that higher doses of vitamin D₃ supplementation during pregnancy are both safe and more effective than standard lower doses in ensuring adequate vitamin D status for both mother and child.
