5-Methyltetrahydrofolate: A promising alternative to synthetic folic acid for preventing neural tube defects

28 Apr 2025

This review article explores the potential of 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF) as an alternative to folic acid in preventing neural tube defects (NTDs) during pregnancy.

The authors discuss that 5-MTHF, the biologically active form of folate, may offer advantages over synthetic folic acid, particularly for individuals with genetic polymorphisms affecting folate metabolism. Unlike folic acid, 5-MTHF does not require enzymatic conversion and is less likely to mask vitamin B12 deficiency.

The review concludes that 5-MTHF could be a suitable alternative to folic acid for NTD prevention, especially in populations with a high prevalence of folate metabolism disorders.

Is 5-methyltetrahydrofolate an alternative to folic acid for the prevention of neural tube defects?
